Warframe is the type of four-player co-op shooter that you might just miss. There are certainly a lot of other titles available right now (Mass Effect 3 comes to mind), so whether or not you’re interested in trying out something like this game really comes down to whether or not you’re that desperate for another third-person shooter. If you are in the mood for a new title, then the question comes down to whether or not Warframe is worth a try.
You’re not risking much by at least giving this title a shot. It’s an open beta, so it’s going to be free to play for the foreseeable future. And while Warframe doesn’t necessarily bring anything new to the table, and it has a number of flaws that most of us come to expect from a game that’s still being worked on, it does show some promise.
It’s also surprisingly enjoyable for the most part. The action to be found here is fast-paced, challenging with the right group of people, and doesn’t feel like a complete rip-off. There are also a host of customizable options to play around with. This might only be an open beta version, and it does have more than its fair share of bugs at this stage, but there’s definitely more than enough to give you an idea of what the game could be when it’s completely finished.
The trouble with that is that Warframe is still nothing really earth-shattering at the end of the day. The game certainly has ambition to be more than just a bland retread of other games’ ideas, but unless this is the first third-person co-op shooter you’ve ever played in your life, it’s likely that you’re not going to be surprised by the game in any meaningful way. How important that is will be up to you, but it’s worth noting that the game is indeed a lot of fun to play. The designers went to a lot of trouble to create a world and gameplay that won’t put you to sleep. Even the most seasoned veteran of the genre will probably have a good time.
It’s just a shame that the folks behind the game couldn’t come up with a better story. Some will argue that story isn’t all that important, but the complete lack of any interesting narrative touches in Warframe is a bit unforgivable in 2013. Simply put? You’re warriors in robot suits fighting aliens. That’s it, so it’s a good thing the gameplay and options are pretty decent. It’s just that such a weak story lends itself well to a feeling of reputation as you make your way through the missions. It also reinforces the fact that when you get tired of this game, you’re not going to feel like you wasted your time per say, but you’re also not going to find an intense desire to play again anytime soon.
Warframe review Conclusion
This isn’t a bad game by any means, but you’ve done it all before.
