Toenail Fungus Remedies You Need to Try

by Wren on April 9, 2013

Toenail fungus is the most common of nail disorders that normally causes a disfiguration, discoloration, and the eventual damage of the toenail. It is known by various medical terms, such as Onychomycosis, Ringworm of the nail, and Tinea unguium.  This infection is caused by a group of fungi called Dermatophytes and hence it’s also called Dermatophytic onychomycosis.  Warm moist environment is usually the breeding ground for Dermatophytes which grow and feed on the protein-rich part of the toenails (keratin) which makes the nail hard and strong.

Toenail fungus is usually unsightly and quite difficult to treat. However, many people have been lucky to treat it with a number of home remedies. Some of the most common toenail fungus remedies at home include the following.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is the most common of all home remedies for toenail fungus. Mix it with warm water and prepare an excellent mixture to soak your toenails and stop the spread of the infection. After proper application, allow your feet to dry up. You must also exfoliate the nail using vinegar in order to get rid of dead skin as well as nail cells. This will keep the skin soft and clean and prevent cracks as well.

Tea Tree Oil

This is the safest and most natural home remedy to cure toenail fungus.  It is also the most effective natural cure for toenail fungus. Tea tree oil has wonderful anti-fungal properties and has helped treat various infections for many years.  When purchasing tea tree oil, ensure that it’s 100% authentic.

Oregano and Thyme oil

Apart from tea tree oil, oils like oregano and thyme are said to have powerful anti-fungal properties which can help in the quick and effective treatment of toenail fungus. However, doctors don’t recommend the use of these oils as they can have powerful side effects affecting the liver, kidneys, and the heart.

Listerine Mouthwash

You may be surprised to learn that Listerine Mouthwash can also be an effective home remedy for toenail fungus. Although it’s used to protect your teeth and prevent bad breath, it has a number of compounds which act as a powerful antiseptic to prevent infections like toenail fungus.

Another easy natural remedy for this infection is basically filing your nail to get rid of the infected part. Although it’s recommended that you file the nail using broken glass, you can make use of a nail file should the pain be unbearable. Just ensure you sterilize the file before use and dispose it after use to prevent the infection from spreading.

Toenail fungus affects millions of people worldwide, especially Onchomycosis, a very common toenail fungus. There are so many OTC oral medications to treat this problem but, unfortunately, many of them are ineffective. They also cause side effects that can affect your liver as you take these medications orally. In addition, topical medications can be ineffective because they don’t always reach the real nail infection under the nail bed.

So, before resorting to taking OTC medications or requesting for prescriptions of expensive medications, you should try these natural toenail fungus remedies.
